Information about cookies
Spanish Law 34/2002 on Information Society Services establishes that it is mandatory to obtain the express consent of users of any website that uses non-essential cookies before they browse it. In addition, in certain cases cookies may collect personal data, in which case the provisions of EU Regulation 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation) apply, especially as regards consent.
What are cookies?
Cookies and other similar technologies such as local shared objects, flash cookies or pixels are tools used by web servers to store and retrieve information about their visitors, as well as to ensure the site works correctly. These devices allow the web server to remember certain data about the user, such as their preferences for viewing that server's pages, username and password, the products they are most interested in, etc. They are also used to build browsing profiles in order to subsequently serve targeted advertising.
Cookies covered by the regulations and exempt cookies
Under the EU directive, the cookies that require the user's informed consent are analytics cookies and advertising and affiliation cookies. Technical cookies and those necessary for the operation of the website or for the provision of services expressly requested by the user are exempt.
What types of cookies are there?
There are five broad groups of cookies:
- Analytics cookies: collect information about how the website is used.
- Social cookies: those required by external social networks.
- Affiliate cookies: allow visits coming from other websites to be tracked where the website has an affiliation agreement in place (affiliate companies).
- Advertising and behavioural cookies: collect information about the user's personal preferences and choices (retargeting).
- Technical and functional cookies: those strictly necessary for the use of the website and for the provision of the contracted service.
